Jo Porter Wood Carver
Jo Porter began his apprenticeship in Auckland in 1992 under master carver Alan Nopera (Ngati Whatua, Ngati Kahu). He went north to Hikurangi in 1997 to train under other master carvers, including Shane Whatarau (Ngati Hau). He has been based in Whangarei for the past 17 years,is now one of the best in his field and well versed in all carving styles. Wood remains his preferred medium, especially New Zealand hardwoods like pohutukawa, Chatham Island akeake and black maire. He is especially adept at hand clubs, but has also worked on major pieces including whare tupuna and Pou tupuna such as the 4.5 metre Tane te wairo on Purerua peninsula near Kerikeri. Jo prefers to follow his own path, carving what appeals to him at the time, but he occasionally accepts commissions.
